Privacy

The comparison engine is JavaScript that runs on your device. When you press Compare, no network request is made and no copy of your text is sent anywhere. You can verify this by opening your browser’s developer tools and watching the network tab while comparing, or by disconnecting from the internet after the page has loaded — the tool continues to work.

Local storage

So that you do not lose work by refreshing, the contents of both panels and your comparison settings are saved in your browser’s local storage. This data stays on your device, is readable only by this site in this browser, and is never transmitted. Selecting Clear removes it immediately, as does clearing site data in your browser settings.

Files you open

Files dragged onto a panel or chosen through the file picker are read locally by your browser and their contents placed into the panel. The file itself is never uploaded.

Share links

A share link encodes both documents, compressed, into the URL fragment — the part after the # symbol. By the design of HTTP, browsers do not transmit the fragment to the web server, so the content of a share link is reconstructed on the recipient’s device without passing through our infrastructure.

Be aware of what this does mean: anyone who receives the link can read its contents, and the link may be retained by whatever you send it through, such as a chat service or email provider. Treat a share link with the same care as the text inside it.

We ask for no account, email address or personal information, and there is no sign-in and no usage limit.

We do use analytics and advertising, described in full below. These measure how the site is used and pay for keeping it free. They record things like which page you visited, roughly where in the world you are and which browser you use. They never receive the text you compare.

The page is served as static files. As with any website, the host serving those files may keep standard server access logs such as IP address, timestamp and requested URL. Those logs cover delivery of the page itself and never include the text you compare, because that text is never sent.

Three third-party services load on this site. All of them are concerned with pages and visits, not with content:

• Google Analytics records page views and general audience information so we know which tools are worth maintaining.
• Microsoft Clarity records aggregate usage patterns and session replays, which show how people move around the interface.
• Google AdSense serves the advertising that funds the site.

These services set cookies and may use them for measurement and, in the case of AdSense, ad personalisation. You can opt out of personalised advertising through Google Ad Settings, and browser-level tracking protection or an ad blocker will stop all three.

Why session replay does not see your text

Session replay is the one feature that could, in principle, capture what you type. It does not here. The editors and the comparison results are explicitly excluded from Clarity’s recording, so the content you paste is never part of a replay and never reaches Microsoft. The comparison itself still runs entirely on your device.

If you would rather load none of this, an ad or tracker blocker will remove all three services, and the comparison tool will continue to work exactly as it does now — it does not depend on them.

Fonts

Web fonts are self-hosted and served from the same origin as the page, so loading the tool does not disclose your visit to a font provider. The icon font the previous version fetched from a third-party stylesheet has been removed in favour of inline icons.
